MARY

Direct biblical statement

Luke 1:43

Mother of my Lord

43 And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

Douay–Rheims · Challoner revision · Luke 1:43

Why this matters

Elizabeth recognizes Mary as the mother of her Lord. Catholic theology understands Mary’s divine motherhood through the identity of Jesus, truly God and truly human. Mary is a creature, and is never independently divine.
