MARY

Biblical typology

Genesis 3:15

The woman and her offspring

15 I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

Douay–Rheims · Challoner revision · Genesis 3:15

Why this matters

The passage concerns enmity between the serpent and the woman’s offspring. Christian interpretation sees Christ’s victory here and Catholic tradition relates Mary to the New Eve. The Challoner “she shall crush” reflects a Vulgate reading; other textual traditions read “he” or “it.” This wording is not independent proof of a Marian dogma.
